John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, otherwise known as J.R.R. Tolkien, is the symbol of the fantasy genre in literature. He built the realm of Middle Earth, which later became the model for future authors who seek to explore their imagination. Tolkien was renowned for his marvelous children’s book, The Hobbit and the immersive tale of The Lord of the Rings. In the Lord of the Rings series, hobbits, men, dwarves, and elves form a defense against evil.
我的观点

From a jolly hobbit who stuck to his routine, to a warrior that could determine the fate of Middle Earth, Frodo, our protagonist, was burdened with a quest without knowing it. Ironically, Hobbits, usually merry old folks who dislike adventures, were constantly dragged into the most perilous and risky adventures in every Tolkien novel. Hobbits, knights, and their association with the Ring would undoubtedly be the core to The Fellowship of the Ring.
Hobbits, though tiny in size, had a stronger mentality than any power-hungry monarch. Both Frodo the Ring Bearer and Samwise the Brave played critical roles in unraveling the schemes of evil. Due to their innocence, the Halflings had the capability to fight the powers of the Ring, which evoked greed in human beings. For any king who owned this artifact brutally murdered his subjects, or worse, triggered a gory massacre. That being said, I believe Hobbits, though they dislike changes to their lives, were made to transform the world. They had the virtue that no knight possessed but were blessed with the determination and humility that any king wished for.
Knights, valiant and chivalrous, were the protectors of peace. Some were the lost descendants of kings and others enjoyed the grip of the sword. Aragorn, loyal and true, was the only succession to the throne of a mighty kingdom. Concealing his real identity at the beginning of the quest, Aragorn proved himself trustworthy by protecting the Hobbits without hesitation. I admire the bravery of Aragorn. Rather calling him the lost king, it would be more suitable for him to take the position of leader and inherit the symbol of perseverance. He had the rationale to make smart decisions and the strength to defend peace with his bare hands.
While the novel is disguised by an epic storyline, there are many hidden messages in between the lines that exposes the nature of humanity and how individuals are trapped in their minds without knowing it. Greed and self protection for instance, are prominent themes throughout the novel.
All of the leaders from every group of individuals seek power, in the novel or in reality. Although there are numerous means to acquire sovereignty in Middle Earth, some are more ambitious than others, in this case, men. A once wise king made the deal with the devil. He could not fight off the possibility of a seemingly bright future that the Ring could bring him. In the end, the king could not destroy the Ring first hand, which led to Frodo’s expedition. Greed is a terrifying attribute that all humans unfortunately share. While it is inevitable that most individuals would want more sometimes, I believe the author is trying to warn us not to go overboard by carrying out actions that could not be unmade.
Self protection is another important concept in the novel. While elves, dwarves, and men work together to fight against evil, they still prioritize their wellbeing compared to saving the world. Even though they wanted to protect peace, all had their own reasons to join the war. Some may seek to explore the realm and others may be finding an escape to reality, and prepare a safe route for them to take when this quest turns sideways. Nonetheless, this logic not only applies to Middle Earth, but also to our world. Most individuals do not put their lives on the line for others benefit or for the greater good. Instead, they think of themselves before taking any action. However, I think this is not selfish. Rather, it is instinctive for humans to protect their rights and welfare.
From ***yzing characters to unraveling the underlying message of the novel, even I am sinking into the universe that J.R.R. Tolkien created it with his pen. Since when I was a little girl, I have always been intrigued by novels under the fiction genre because I do not have to limit my imagination. Doing magic to my mind, taking the identity of a warrior, or being a damsel in distress are all the stories that have sped across my head when I couldn’t fall asleep.
That being said, Tolkien brought the fiction in me to life. He wrote countless novels that fit my idea of a fantasy. With immortal elves, stubborn dwarves, and cheerful hobbits, I couldn’t imagine any world more completed than this. As plain as it sounds, I highly recommend The Lord of the Rings series since we can all immerse ourselves into the world where we stand on the brink of a battle between good and evil along with all of Middle Earth to protect you from harm.
