Tuck Everlasting is a book about immortality. The Tuck family accidentally drank the water from the spring in the forest that made them immortal. They hid this secret because they feared the world would be too chaotic if others discovered the secret of immortality. However, Winnie Foster accidentally discovered this secret. The youngest son of the Tuck family, Jesse Tuck, hoped that Winnie would drink the water and become immortal as well. At last, Winnie didn't choose to
live forever.
我的观点

I have always been afraid of death. I remember very well that when I was only five years old, my great-grandfather died. At that time, I felt more frightened than sad. I was uncomfortable at his funeral. I was so scared when we said goodbye to him before he was cremated. I kept asking my parents what happens to people after death. My father told me that death is just like being asleep, but that there is no awakening. My father's explanation of death really scared me. I did not like to sleep forever. I had a nightmare the night of my great-grandfather's funeral. I saw myself in the air, and my body on the ground, completely lifeless! I was screaming and kicking my body. I was trying to wake up. I was very desperate. It took me a long time to come out of this nightmare.
Then I came across this book called "Tuck Everlasting". Everlasting means that something would last forever. Everlasting sounded good to me at first. I was so afraid of death, and I didn't want to die. But after I read the book, I have changed my mind.
Immortality means: People won't die because nothing can harm them. People could go on living forever and ever. It seemed perfect. But as I read on, I realized it wasn't that simple. I realized why the Tucks were so unhappy and why they were so depressed when they found out that they were immortal and invincible.
First, it might not be fun to be the only one who is still alive. To live forever would be to leave our loved ones behind. We would be the only one left alive in the world. On this book, Miles Tuck once had a family. He had a wife and two children. He loved them very much. But his wife thought it was witchcraft that made him immortal. And the next thing he knew, Miles' wife took his children and left. Miles was very upset about their leaving. Therefore, is it worth it to live alone and forever? Is it worth to see the people you love leave the world, leave you? In my opinion, no. It's not worth it. I love my parents and my brother. I need friends too. It's scary to be left alone.
Second, we can't live and not die. Jesse Tuck seemed to be the only Tuck who enjoyed being eternal. He was carefree and happy. He liked Winnie. He hoped Winnie could drink the spring water when she was seventeen. Then they could be together forever. Sounded tempting, huh? Jesse gave her a bottle of spring water from the woods. If she drank it, she would live forever, just like the Tuck's. In the end, Winnie decided that she did not want to drink the spring that would make her live forever.
I think Winnie was influenced by Jesse's father, Angus Tuck. Angus hated being eternal. He told Winnie, "They're not called living. They are rocks. Life is supposed to be full of change and surprises. It must contain death. Angus told Winnie, "You can't have life without death." Angus also said he would do anything to get back in the circle of life.
I agree with Angus. The fun of life is not knowing what will happen next. We might not value our life and our friends if we knew we weren't going to die. Will it make us happy? In addition, if there were no death, the whole world would be a mess. If everyone lived forever, there would be other problems such as pollution. There would not be enough food and space for everyone either.
Third, I also agree with Angus that if people find out the secret of being able to live forever, it would be a disaster. People will do terrible things to become eternal. Since the beginning of mankind, people have been searching for some kind of medicine. Something almost magical that can make us live forever. Some people believe there really is such a thing. Others don't. As far as I am concerned, science can’t do that yet. But let us assume that there is such a thing, like the water in the forest. What would happen? Would people fight for it? Would people do absolutely anything to get it? The man in the yellow suit wanted to live forever and he took all risks to get it. However, he ended up getting killed.
Can you imagine if the whole world knew about the spring water? Everyone would come and fight for the water. They would come and risk everything just to live forever. They wouldn't know the consequences. But they wouldn't care. When I was thinking about this phenomenon, I couldn't help but get scared. In my opinion, if there really is such a thing, it might not be revealed for the sake of all of humanity until we have figured out what to do next.
Furthermore, I also think that Winnie was brave, smart, and had a good heart. She was brave to save the Tucks. She also protected the toad from the dog and helped the toad escape. Then she made up her mind not to seek eternity and didn't tell anyone about the secret of the water. I hope I can act like her. Later in my life, I hope to make wise decisions like she did.
Although I was so afraid of death, after reading this book, I don't think I would choose to drink the spring water if I had the chance. Just like what James Dean said: "Dream as if you will live forever; live as if you will die today," I will be ready to embrace death when that day comes. But until that day comes, I will live. I am going to live every day as if there will be no tomorrow. I will be happy and being positive. That is my definition of eternity. This is forever for me!
